The ROCK 3.0: Airbrush Part II

I have found airbrushing is easy.  Decaling is a whole different can of worms.  Uggh.  I can imagine this is somewhat easier in HO scale, but good grief.

Decaling the ICG caboose went pretty smooth and quick.  I attempted to decal the stripes on the end of the Illinois Terminal GP7.  Well, that didn't go as well.  Finally, I said screw it and just placed IT Company decals on the ends.  I also screwed up the last "l" at the end of Illinois Terminal.  I figure some weathering can make that disappear.

Admittedly, I'm not the best at this at all, but I am willing to try.  I guess that counts for something.  Overall, they are my first projects like this and I'm pleased.

One question?  How do you get rid of the film look after decaling?  I sprayed both pieces with dullcote.

  1. I've been painting and decaling N scale since 1981. Like anything, practice makes "more better"... there hardly ever being a perfect job. Sometimes when I have finicky film I will overspray a bit with Glosscoat, then hit it with Dullcoat. Seems to do the trick. The best way to ensure the film will disappear is to make sure your shell is glossy to start with before decaling.

I am curious about using "Future" as an overcoat... yes, the floor polish. Some swear by it, but I have not used it.

  2. Hi Steven , I'm with Kevin Gloss cote is a must before any decalling. If you still can see some silvering give the decals another coat of Solvaset. You might even get a small very sharp pin and prick into any small areas that have not settled and give it a further coat of Solvaset. Then once all down, and no silver a nice coat of Dull Cote will do the trick.
It is an absolute must to have a gloss surface before decalling.
    Have fun.

  3. Unfortunately, I didn't do a gloss coat first. Hopefully, I can resolve the issue.

  4. Steven. Do you have another set of decals. If so I would start over, take off the ones you have applied, gloss coat the loco and then you will see much better results.

    1. I have more on that sheet, but would have to put together the individual road number.

  5. Your weathering is quite exquisite; you might consider a light application to cover some of the decal film. Removing the decals is a pretty radical step!

    1. Majority of my cars have been weathered by someone else. I don't have those kind of mad skills. :-)
